MUMBAI: The legendary Sarangi player-musician of international fame Ustad Sultan Khan has passed away this afternoon. Ustad’s death is a big loss to the whole Indian music industry. The Indian music abode has been facing loses since some time, as first Jagjit Singh then Bhupen Hazarika and now Ustad Sultan Khan passed away.
Khan died at 71 earlier today on Sunday due to kidney failure. Tomorrow, Ustad Sultan’s funeral will be held in Jodhpur. The who’s who of Bollywood is expected to attend the funeral of the great maestro of Indian classical music. Ustad not only made his name in the world of classical music but also vanquished the flags of fame in Hindi pop scene.
Last year (2010), Ustad Sultan Khan was also awarded with Padma Bhushan for his marvelous work in the field of Indian classical music. He got huge popularity in the entire world because of his instrument Sarangi’s playing. Since the age of 11, Ustad has been associated with the field of music.
His powerful baritone voice made him popular even among those listeners who did not know him as a classical singer and Sarangi player. The songs like ‘Piya Basanti’ (from his album ‘Piya Basanti) and ‘Albela Sajan’ (from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam) shoved him to heights of fame in India and abroad.
His collaborations with the international musical legends added more sparkles to his already bigger repute on international circuit. He collaborated with the likes of Pandit Ravi Shankar for Dark Horse World Tour, Ustad Zakir Hussain (the legendary tabla maestro), Adnan Sami and many other foreign giants. His percussions with Zakir Hussain are still loved to be heard.
Ustad twice bagged the Sangeet Natya Academy Award, American Academy of Artists Award and few other strapping distinctions in his career.
